Michael Doven's new production company, United Pictures Group, hit the gate running with the soon-to-be-released Durant's Never Closes. Doven did not waste any time establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in the film industry. In fact, rarely has a production company seen such success in its first endeavors. It is hardly surprising, given Michael Doven's obvious talent and his work in various roles in previous blockbuster movies, including Mission Impossible, Eyes Wide Shut, Interview With The Vampire and Vanilla Sky. However, few people would have predicted the extent to which his first solo ventures would succeed and the diversity of his company's film portfolio.

The latest of these, The Out-of-Town Wedding, combines some of the best of the comedy and drama genres for a truly entertaining movie. Five friends, all of them very different, converge on a resort for a wedding. Each has his or her own reason for attending: Denny is there for the chance to see his ex-girlfriend, Clover; Joe is there because it is free; Guy is there to score with women; Jamie there because it is her friend being married; and Jamie's husband Ted is there because Jamie wants to go and Ted does what he is told.

Between a rehearsal dinner, get-togethers, golf excursions, meals with the friends, spa treatments and even a trip to a local strip club, the friends discover things about themselves and each other. For example, Denny and Clover's dysfunctional relationship is front and center for much of the movie; the dynamic between the two is so odd that almost everyone is waiting for the explosion. However, surprises abound when the groom provides the dynamite by outing his unfaithful wife. After the disastrous reception, Jamie and Ted discover how much fun public intimacy can be, Joe falls for a stripper, Guy learns more about friendship and Denny finally confronts Clover and resolves their conflict forever!

Like many similar movies, The Out-of-Town Wedding relies on the juxtaposition of normal relationships and settings to create absurdity. Even better, it speaks to all of us because of the fact that we have all, at one time or another, known friends like these or even been them ourselves!

However, when Michael Doven brings his deft touch to film, even the absurd becomes exciting and palatable. His work on many films shows his attention to detail, and The Out-of-Town Wedding is no exception. Denny, Clover, Jamie, Ted, Joe and Guy spring to life as characters to whom we can all relate, and the backdrop of setting and supporting cast lends its color impeccably to the final product.
